Party and birthday neon backdrops: size, setup, power
Neon backdrop ideas for birthdays, baby showers, graduations and anniversaries: wording you can reuse, sizes, hanging setups and battery power.
Updated

A party backdrop has to look good for one evening and in every photo taken in front of it. A neon sign helps with both, and unlike paper banners it comes back out for the next birthday. This guide covers what to write, how big to go, how to set it up and how to power it where there is no outlet.

Ideas by occasion
Birthdays. “Happy Birthday” is the sign you will use most. Our ready-made Happy Birthday neon sign is hot pink script on two lines, so it fits a backdrop or a mantel. A first name works too, and it can move to a bedroom wall afterwards.
Baby showers and gender reveals. “Oh Baby” in light pink is made for this, and the Oh Baby sign later makes a soft light for the nursery. See our kids’ room guide for how to mount it there.
Graduations. “Congrats Grad”, the graduate’s name, or a short line in school colors. Two colors in one sign cost nothing extra.
Anniversaries and engagements. Two first names with an ampersand, or a short phrase like “Still Us”. A sign like this keeps working at home long after the party.
Any party. “Let’s Party”, “Good Times” or “Cheers” suit a bar cart, a game night or a holiday party. Browse all party neon signs.
Wording you can reuse
Keep the parts that change each year (the age, the year, “Class of …”) off the sign. Put them on balloons, a cake topper or a printed card next to it. A sign with a name or a general phrase earns its place again next year.
Choosing a size
Width is measured across the widest line. Each letter or space needs about 2 in of width on the longest line. That is the smallest width that fits; a backdrop often wants more.
| Wording | Longest line | Smallest width | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oh Baby | 7 | 20 in | Gift table, small wall |
| Happy Birthday (2 lines) | 8 | 20 in | Mantel, small backdrop |
| Let’s Party | 11 | 24 in | Photo corner, bar cart |
| Congrats Grad | 13 | 30 in | Backdrop, food table |
Two ways to decide:
- Above a table. A common rule for art above furniture is about two thirds of the furniture’s width. A 6 ft banquet table is 72 in long, so 36 to 48 in reads as a proper centerpiece.
- Inside an arch or frame. Measure the inside width and the inside height of the arch. Leave a margin of balloons or backdrop around the sign so it does not look squeezed. The neon designer shows an estimated height for your text, which helps here.
Ready-made party designs come in 20, 24, 30, 36, 48 and 60 in widths. Custom signs go from 20 to 120 in. Our neon sign size guide has more examples.
Backdrop setups that work
Every LED sign ships with the backboard, a dimmer, the plug-in adapter and the mounting kit you choose. Pick the kit that matches your setup.
On a wall at home
Use wall standoffs if you can drill, or no-drill adhesive mounts if you rent. The no-drill mounts go one per corner on a smooth, clean, dry wall and need time to set before the sign goes on, so put them up the day before. Textured or freshly painted walls hold less. Our guide to hanging without drilling goes step by step.
On a backdrop stand or balloon arch
Hang the sign from the top bar with the ceiling hanging kit: thin steel cables with snap hooks that clip into the 1/4 in holes in the board. Slide the grippers to level it. You can also tie the board to the frame through its holes. Balloons can frame the sign, but do not use them to hold it up, and keep them from pressing on the front so the words stay readable.
On a table
A tabletop neon sign (20, 24 or 30 in) stands on a clear 8 mm base that is shorter than the sign and centered under it. It suits a gift table, a dessert table or a bar.
Power where there is no outlet
The sign runs on 12 V DC. Indoors, the plug-in adapter works on 100 to 240 V.
- Outlet nearby: add a DC extension cable of 6.5, 10 or 16 ft if needed. Use one extension, not a chain, and tape the cable down where people walk.
- No outlet, or a yard party: choose the plug-in plus 8 x AA battery box when you order, at no extra cost, or buy the battery box on its own.
| Party length | Battery sets |
|---|---|
| Up to about 4 hours | 1 set |
| About 4 to 8 hours | 2 sets, swap halfway |
| All day | Plug in |
Batteries are not included. Switch the box off between the photos and the cake if the party runs long. For a sign that lives outside, the outdoor build is IP67 rated; the adapter and battery box still need to stay dry. More in neon sign power options.
Color and brightness
Hot pink, golden yellow and warm white are the party regulars. A colored sign tints the cake and the balloons near it, which can look great in photos. Color changing (RGB) costs extra and comes with a touch remote, so the sign can cycle through colors for a dance floor and hold one color for the photos.
Turn the brightness down with the included dimmer when people take pictures. At full brightness, phone cameras often show the letters as white. Our guide to neon in photos and video explains how to get the color to show.
Order in time
You get a free design proof first, with free revisions, and nothing is made until you approve it. After approval:
- Standard production: 15 to 20 days
- Priority: 10 to 14 days
- Express: 7 to 9 days
- Transit in the US: 3 to 5 days on top
For a party on a fixed date, order a month or more ahead. If you are short on time, add rush production to each custom sign.
Storing it for next year
When the party is over, switch the sign off, let it cool, and wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth. Keep the box it came in and store the sign flat or upright in it, with the adapter and dimmer in the same box. Do not wind the cable tightly around the board. Our cleaning and care guide has the details.
