Are LED neon signs safe? Heat, power and overnight use

LED neon runs on 12 V DC and stays cool. What is certified, leaving a sign on overnight, bedrooms and kids' rooms, and what venues and fire inspectors ask.

Bedroom with a lit neon sign on the wall

People often ask whether a neon sign is safe in a bedroom, safe to leave on all night, or a fire risk. For LED neon, the short answer is that it is a low-voltage, cool-running light, and most of the safety comes down to sensible installation. This guide explains why, what is certified, and how to set up a sign at home, in a child’s room or at a venue.

The short answer

  • Low voltage at the sign. LED neon runs on 12 V DC. The plug-in adapter turns your 100 to 240 V outlet into 12 V before power reaches the sign.
  • Cool running. The tube stays cool or slightly warm to the touch, even after hours on.
  • Certified power supply. The adapter is a cULus Listed power supply.
  • Your part: install it out of reach where needed, keep the adapter dry and uncovered, and manage the cable.

Low voltage, not high voltage

The only part of the system that connects to household power is the adapter. Everything after it, the cable, the dimmer and the sign, carries 12 V DC.

Real glass neon is different. It runs on a high-voltage transformer, typically thousands of volts, and the glass tubes can get hot to the touch. Glass is also more fragile in shipping and handling. If you are deciding between the two, read LED neon vs glass neon.

Cool to the touch

LED neon makes very little heat. The tube can feel slightly warm after a long time on, but not hot. The adapter may also feel warm after hours of use, which is normal for any power supply. Give it some air: do not bury it under bedding, cushions, rugs or curtains.

What is certified, and what is not

We are precise about this, because it matters to venues and inspectors.

Part Certification
Power supply (adapter) cULus Listed (E466625); also CE, FCC, SAA and RoHS marks; Class II double insulated, fully encapsulated, no fan
LED light source Certified part

Only the power supply and the LED light source are certified parts. Please use the adapter that came with your sign. If you need a new one, our replacement power adapter is sized to your sign: give us the order number, the size of the sign or a photo of the old adapter’s label.

Leaving it on overnight or all day

An LED neon sign can run for many hours a day. A few habits make long use easy:

  1. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet or a good-quality power strip, not a chain of extension cords.
  2. Keep the adapter dry and uncovered, with some air around it.
  3. Use a timer or smart plug so the sign switches off at a set time.
  4. Turn the dimmer down at night. A lower setting is easier on the eyes in a bedroom.
  5. Switch it off when you are away for days at a time.

The LED tube has a rated life of 50,000 hours. Here is what that means in years, on paper:

Hours on per day Rated life in years
8 About 17
12 About 11
24 About 5.7

Real life depends on how the sign is used and handled. Our guide to how long LED neon signs last covers this, and every LED sign has a 2-year warranty with free repair.

Bedrooms and kids’ rooms

A neon sign makes a good night light or name sign for a kids’ room or nursery. Rather than relying on the sign alone, install it with children in mind:

  • Mount it out of reach, high on the wall, with wall standoffs or no-drill adhesive mounts.
  • Keep the adapter and cable away from the crib or bed. Run the cable along the wall or baseboard and secure it with cable clips or a cord cover so it cannot be pulled.
  • Keep small parts out of reach. Standoff caps, spare screws and the battery box, if you use one, should not be within a child’s grasp.
  • Use the dimmer. Turned down, a sign such as the Crescent Moon gives a soft night-light glow.

Venues, events and fire inspectors

Wedding venues, restaurants and event halls sometimes have rules for decorations and electrical items. Ask early what they need. Here is what we can offer:

  • A flame-retardant backboard. Our standard backboard is acrylic. When a venue or fire inspector requires it, we can make the backboard in flame-retardant polycarbonate (PC) instead. Tell us before production.
  • Clear facts about certification. The power supply is cULus Listed (E466625); the LED light source is a certified part. Please describe it that way to your venue.
  • Battery power where outlets are a problem. The 8 x AA battery box runs a sign for about 4 to 5 hours per set of batteries, with no cable across the floor.

At events, tape cables flat or route them away from walkways, and keep the adapter off the floor where drinks can spill. Our guide to neon for events and photo booths has more ideas.

Outdoors

An outdoor sign needs the outdoor build: an IP67 rated tube and sealed connections, with a test report. The adapter must still stay dry, indoors or in a covered weatherproof outlet box. Read indoor vs outdoor neon signs before you order.

When to unplug and call us

Unplug the sign and contact us if you notice a damaged cable, a cracked adapter, a burning smell, or flickering that does not stop when you check the plugs. Our troubleshooting guide covers the common fixes, and repairs are free during the 2-year warranty.

Questions

Is it safe to leave an LED neon sign on overnight?

LED neon runs on 12 V DC and stays cool, and our power supply is a certified, fully encapsulated unit with no fan. Plug it into a wall outlet, keep the adapter uncovered, and use a timer or the dimmer if you want it on all night.

How long can a neon sign stay on?

An LED neon sign can run for many hours a day. The LED tube is rated for 50,000 hours, which is about 17 years at 8 hours a day. A timer or smart plug makes long daily use easy to manage.

Are LED neon signs a fire hazard?

LED neon is low voltage and runs cool, unlike glass neon, which uses a high-voltage transformer and can get hot. As with any electrical item, use the adapter that came with the sign, keep it dry and uncovered, and unplug it if the cable or adapter is damaged.

Is an LED neon sign UL listed?

The power supply is cULus Listed (E466625) and also carries CE, FCC, SAA and RoHS marks, and the LED light source is a certified part.

Can I put a neon sign in a child's room?

Yes, with sensible installation. Mount it high on the wall, out of reach, keep the adapter and cable away from the crib or bed, and secure the cable along the wall. The dimmer turns it down to a soft night-light glow.
