Neon sign size guide: how big should your sign be?
How to size a custom neon sign: a width chart by characters and lines, in and cm, wall and furniture rules, letter height for distance, sizes by room.
Updated

The most common sizing mistake is choosing a width first and then trying to fit the words into it. It works better the other way around: start with your text, find the smallest width that holds it, then check that width against the wall and how far away people will be. This guide walks through those steps, with size charts and examples for common rooms. When you are ready, the size guide page and the neon designer let you try it with your own words.
How we measure a neon sign
- Width is measured left to right across the widest line of the design. It is the number you choose when you order, from 20 to 120 in.
- Height follows from your text and font. A one-line name is short and wide; each extra line makes the sign taller. The designer shows the height as an estimate as you type.
- Depth is small: the standard clear acrylic backboard is 6 mm (about 1/4 in), and wall standoffs float it about 1 in off the wall.
Not every maker measures the same way. Some quote the longest side of the sign, which on a tall design is the height. When you compare sizes, check what the number means. Ours is always the width.
Step 1: Count the characters on your longest line
A width allows about 1 character, spaces included, per 2 in of width on the longest line. So 10 characters need at least 20 in, and 18 characters need at least 36 in. Shorter lines above or below fit inside the same width, so two or three lines hold more words at the same width.
| Width | One line | Two lines, in all | Three lines, in all | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 in (51 cm) | up to 10 | up to 20 | up to 30 | A short name, one word, a desk sign |
| 24 in (61 cm) | up to 12 | up to 24 | up to 36 | A name, a nursery wall |
| 30 in (76 cm) | up to 15 | up to 30 | up to 45 | Two short names, a short phrase |
| 36 in (91 cm) | up to 18 | up to 36 | up to 54 | Wedding names, a bedroom, a home bar |
| 42 in (107 cm) | up to 21 | up to 42 | up to 63 | Above a queen bed, a salon wall |
| 48 in (122 cm) | up to 24 | up to 48 | up to 72 | A wedding backdrop, a bar back wall |
| 54 in (137 cm) | up to 27 | up to 54 | up to 81 | Above a large sofa or a king bed |
| 60 in (152 cm) | up to 30 | up to 60 | up to 90 | A long phrase, an event backdrop |
| 72 in (183 cm) | up to 36 | up to 72 | up to 108 | A business wall, a large event |
| 84 in (213 cm) | up to 42 | up to 84 | up to 126 | A long name wall, a stage |
| 96 in (244 cm) | up to 48 | up to 96 | up to 144 | A large logo wall, a venue |
| 120 in (305 cm) | up to 60 | up to 120 | up to 180 | The biggest walls and events |
Counts are characters with spaces; on two or three lines, each line holds up to the one-line count. Script and block fonts take slightly different room, and our guide to the best fonts for neon signs shows how the choice changes the look.
A useful trick: split long phrases
Because the size follows the longest line, splitting a phrase onto two lines makes the letters bigger at the same width. “Happily Ever After” on one line is 18 characters and needs 36 in. As “Happily / Ever After” the longest line is 10 characters, so a 36 in sign shows much larger letters, and the sign gets taller. You can type up to 3 lines in the designer.
Size groups at a glance
| Group | Widths | Typical places |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) | Desk, shelf, bar top, a name over a crib or a bed |
| Medium | 30 to 42 in (76 to 107 cm) | Bedroom, living room, home bar, salon, wedding names |
| Large | 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm) | Wedding backdrop, above a large sofa, bar back wall |
| Extra large | 72 to 120 in (183 to 305 cm) | Business walls, stages, events, big storefronts |
Step 2: Check the width and height against your wall
A sign that is too small looks lost; one that is too big crowds the room. Two rules from picture hanging work well for neon too.
- Over furniture, aim for about two thirds of its width. If your sofa is 84 in wide, two thirds is 56 in, so a 54 or 60 in sign looks balanced. The same rule works over a bed, a console table or a back bar.
- On an empty wall, hang the centre at about eye level. A common guide is about 57 in from the floor to the centre of the piece. Above furniture, hang it a little above the furniture instead, so the two read as a group.
Check the height you have as well: the space between a headboard and the ceiling, under a shelf, or inside a window frame. A second or third line makes the sign taller at the same width. Leave some clear wall on each side so the glow has room. For the hanging itself, see how to hang a neon sign.
Step 3: Think about viewing distance
A sign maker’s rule of thumb is about 1 in of letter height for every 10 ft people will read it from.
| Reading distance | Smallest comfortable letter height | Typical place |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft | about 1 in | Bedroom, desk, small office |
| 20 ft | about 2 in | Living room, salon, wedding tables |
| 30 ft | about 3 in | Bar back wall, restaurant, shop window from the sidewalk |
| 50 ft | about 5 in | Large venue, stage, warehouse wall |
| 100 ft | about 10 in | A storefront seen across a parking lot |
Script lowercase letters read smaller than block capitals of the same height, so go a size up for script seen from far away. In the designer, pick the width whose estimated height gives letters at least that tall. If one long line gives letters that are too short, split it onto two lines or go up a width.
Examples by room and use
Weddings
| Spot | Width to start from |
|---|---|
| Cake, dessert or bar table | 20 to 30 in, standing on a clear base |
| Welcome table or entrance | 24 to 36 in |
| Sweetheart table or flower wall | 36 to 48 in for names, up to 60 in for a phrase |
| Dance floor, stage or a large hall | 60 in and up |
“Emma & Noah” is 11 characters, so it needs at least 22 in; at 36 in the names are larger and easier to read from the tables. Our wedding neon sign guide covers color and timing, and the custom wedding neon sign has the designer set up for names.
Bedrooms and kids’ rooms
A queen bed is 60 in wide, so about 40 in suits it; a 36 or 42 in sign fits. A king bed is 76 in wide, so about 50 in, which means a 48 or 54 in sign. For a single name, 6 to 8 letters fit a 20 to 24 in name sign. In a child’s room, mount it high and out of reach, and keep the adapter and cable away from the crib or bed. See neon signs for bedrooms for more ideas.
Living rooms, home bars and bars
Above a sofa, two thirds of the sofa width is the starting point; on a gallery wall or over a shelf, 30 to 36 in holds its own. Behind a home bar, 30 to 48 in suits a short word or phrase. In a bar or restaurant, measure from the farthest table and use the distance table. Our bar neon signs come in widths from 20 to 60 in.
Businesses and shop windows
A logo behind a reception desk often looks right at about two thirds of the desk width. In a window, think about the sidewalk: someone 30 ft away reads letters of about 3 in comfortably. Our guide to neon signs for business goes through logos, windows and outdoor signs.
Desks, shelves and counters
The tabletop neon sign comes in 20, 24 or 30 in widths and stands on a clear 8 mm acrylic base that is shorter than the sign and sits centred under it.
Common sizing mistakes
- Choosing the width before the words. Write the text first, then size it.
- Forgetting spaces and symbols. Every space counts as a character, and so does an &.
- Measuring the width but not the height above a headboard, under a shelf or in a window.
- Ignoring reading distance. A sign read from across a bar needs bigger letters than one above a bed.
- Comparing numbers that mean different things. Check whether a size is the width or the longest side.
- Forgetting the outlet. Plan where the adapter plugs in and how the cable runs.
Before you order
- Mark the width and height on the wall with painter’s tape and look at it from where you will usually stand.
- Check where the nearest outlet is. A DC extension cable can add distance.
- Type your words into the designer and compare widths. You will see a free proof before anything is made, and you can ask for changes then.
