Power adapters, dimmers and remotes for LED neon

Our LED neon signs run on 12 V DC. A plug-in adapter turns the 100 to 240 V from the wall into 12 V, and every sign arrives with its adapter and a dimmer, in-line or remote. Color-changing (RGB) signs come with their own controller and remote. The parts on this page replace, extend or upgrade those.

The power adapter is the same 12 V DC supply we ship with our signs: cULus Listed (E466625), with CE, FCC, SAA and RoHS marks, Class II double insulated, fully encapsulated and without a fan. Adapters are sized to the sign, so tell us the order number or the size of the sign, or send a photo of the old adapter's label, and we send the matching wattage. Keep it indoors and dry, also for outdoor signs.

For dimming, the remote dimmer plugs in between the adapter and the sign and gives on/off and brightness from a small wireless remote. The in-line dimmer is a knob on the cable that turns the sign down to a night-light glow. Both are for single-color 12 V signs, not RGB signs or glass neon. The RGB controller replaces the receiver and touch remote of a color-changing sign: pick one color or let it cycle, from up to about 100 ft away.

To put more distance between the outlet and the sign, add a DC extension cable of 6.5, 10 or 16 ft; use one rather than chaining several, and ask us about long runs. Where there is no outlet at all, the battery box holds 8 AA batteries and runs a sign for about 4 to 5 hours per set.

The power options guide and the dimmer and RGB guide explain which to choose.

  • Replacing an adapter? Send the order number or a photo of the old label so we match the wattage.
  • The remote and in-line dimmers are for single-color 12 V signs only.
  • Use one extension cable rather than several; ask us before a long run.
  • Batteries are not included with the battery box; bring a second set for long events.
  • Keep the adapter indoors and dry, even for an outdoor sign.

Questions

Which adapter do I need for my sign?

Adapters are sized to the sign. Tell us the order number or the size of the sign, or send a photo of the old adapter's label, and we send a 12 V adapter with the matching wattage.

Can I use the remote dimmer with a color-changing sign?

No. The remote and in-line dimmers are for single-color 12 V signs. A color-changing (RGB) sign uses its RGB controller, which also sets the brightness.

How long does the battery box run a sign?

About 4 to 5 hours per set of 8 AA batteries; a fresh set gives another 4 to 5 hours. Batteries are not included.

How much power does an LED neon sign use?

About 8 to 12 W per meter of tube, or roughly 2.5 to 3.5 W per foot. Multiply by the tube length of your sign, which the proof can tell you; the energy use guide shows the math.

How can I make the power cable longer?

Add one DC extension cable of 6.5, 10 or 16 ft between the adapter and the sign. Use one rather than chaining several, and ask us first for a longer run.

My sign will not turn on. What should I check?

Check that the adapter is plugged in and that each plug between the adapter, the dimmer and the sign is pushed fully home. Then plug the sign straight into the adapter to see whether the dimmer is the problem. If it still does not light, contact us: the 2-year warranty includes free repair.
