Light boxes and backlit signs

A light box is a sign you read in passing. Our ON AIR light box and PICK UP light box are double-sided LED boxes on a bracket that sticks out at a right angle from the wall, so they can be read from both ends of a hallway or along a counter. Each comes in 12 x 4 in or 24 x 8 in, plug-in or hardwired, with a wireless remote for on/off and brightness and the side-mount kit in the box.

ON AIR marks a podcast room, a recording booth, a streaming setup or a home office while you are live. PICK UP marks the counter where orders are collected or where delivery drivers wait. For other words, or a box in your shape and colors, the custom double-sided light box is made to order with a free mockup: rectangle, round or a custom shape, with your frame finish and artwork. It suits storefronts, restaurants, cafes and takeaway counters, where a flag sign can be seen from up and down the street.

The backlit printed acrylic sign is a different idea. Your logo is printed on the front of a thick acrylic panel, and a ring of LED neon tube on the back throws a soft halo onto the wall around it. It always sits off the wall on standoffs, about 1 in by default, so the light can spread. Because the logo is printed, it still reads when the light is off.

Box or neon? A light box puts the words on a lit panel that people read from either side; a neon sign draws lines of light on clear acrylic and is read from the front. The light box vs neon guide compares them. For boxes for several locations, use the trade form. Hardwired boxes connect to the building's wiring, so have a licensed electrician install them.

  • Mount a flag sign where it can be seen from both directions, above head height in a hallway.
  • The 24 x 8 in box reads from farther away; pick it for a long hallway or a storefront.
  • Choose hardwired only if an electrician will connect it; otherwise take the plug-in version.
  • Leave clear wall around a backlit sign so the halo has room to show.

Questions

What is the difference between a light box and a neon sign?

A light box has the words on a lit panel, often on both faces, and sticks out from the wall so people read it from the side. A neon sign is lines of LED neon tube on clear acrylic, mounted flat to the wall or hung, and read from the front. The comparison guide helps you choose.

What sizes do the ON AIR and PICK UP light boxes come in?

Both come in 12 x 4 in and 24 x 8 in, plug-in with the adapter or hardwired. The box, a wireless remote, the adapter and cord, and the side-mount kit are included.

Can I get a light box with my own words or logo?

Yes. The custom double-sided light box is made to order in a rectangle, a round or a custom shape, with your artwork and frame finish. It is priced by quote, with a free mockup first.

Does a backlit printed sign mount flat on the wall?

No. It always sits off the wall on standoffs, about 1 in by default, so the LED tube on the back can throw its halo onto the wall around the panel.

Who should install a hardwired light box?

A hardwired box connects to the building wiring, so a licensed electrician should install it. If you want to plug it in yourself, choose the plug-in version.
