Neon light box vs neon sign: which one do you need?
Light boxes, backlit printed panels and LED neon signs compared: how each lights up, where each works best, sizes, mounting and how to order.
Updated

People often use “neon sign” for anything that lights up, but a light box, a backlit printed panel and a neon sign do quite different jobs. One is built to be read from a hallway, one shows a logo exactly as printed, and one is a glowing shape that sets the mood of a room. This guide explains how each one works and which suits which job.
The three options in one look
| Light box | Backlit printed panel | LED neon sign | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it lights | Face lit evenly from inside | Halo of light on the wall behind the panel | Open line of light from the tube |
| What you see | Clear words or artwork on a lit face | Your full-color logo, framed by a glow | A glowing outline of words or shapes |
| Mounting | On a side bracket, sticking out from the wall | On standoffs, about 1 in off the wall | Flat on the wall, hung, stuck on or stood on a base |
| Sides | Double-sided | One side | One side |
| Best for | Studios, pickup counters, storefronts, hallways | Reception walls, logos with fine detail | Decor, photo walls, events, bars, rooms |

Light boxes
A light box is a closed box with a face that is lit from inside. The light spreads across the whole face, so the words are easy to read and look the same from edge to edge. Ours are double-sided and mount on a bracket that sticks out at a right angle from the wall, often called a flag mount. That means people see it from both ends of a hallway or both directions along a street.
ON AIR and PICK UP light boxes
- The ON AIR light box marks a podcast room, recording booth, streaming setup, radio studio or home office, so people in the hallway know not to walk in.
- The PICK UP light box marks an order pickup counter or a delivery driver zone.
- Both come in 12 x 4 in or 24 x 8 in, plug-in or hardwired. In the box: the light box, a wireless remote for on, off and brightness, the AC adapter and cord, and the side-mount kit.
A hardwired box connects to your building’s wiring, which is a job for a licensed electrician. The plug-in version only needs an outlet nearby.
Custom light boxes
For other words, a shop name or a logo, the custom double-sided light box has a neon-style design on both faces. The shape (rectangle, round or custom), the frame finish and the artwork are made to order. It suits storefronts, restaurants, pizzerias, cafes, takeaway counters and hallways. It is priced by quote with a free mockup.
Backlit printed panels
A backlit printed acrylic sign is a thick acrylic panel printed with your logo on the front. On its back, a ring of LED neon tube follows the panel edge a little in from it and throws a soft halo of light onto the wall. The panel always sits off the wall on standoffs, about 1 in by default, so the light has room to spread. The corners are slightly rounded.
Because the logo is printed, every color, gradient and small word stays exactly as in your artwork. The glow frames it rather than drawing it. That makes it a good choice for a reception wall where the logo must look right, or for artwork too detailed for tube. It is made to size from your file and priced by quote with a free mockup.
LED neon signs
An LED neon sign is a flexible silicone tube set into a groove in a clear acrylic board. The tube draws your words or shapes as an open line of light, and the glow falls on the wall around them. It is the most decorative of the three: it changes the feel of a room, and it is what people photograph at weddings, parties, bars and salons.
Neon signs come from 20 to 120 in wide, in 18 colors or color changing, and mount on wall standoffs, ceiling cables, no-drill adhesive mounts or a free-standing base. For a logo with fine detail, the neon sign on a printed backboard combines a full-color print with neon on top. Our guide to turning your logo into a neon sign explains the options.
Which one for which job
A studio, podcast room or streaming setup
The two do different jobs. The ON AIR light box outside the door warns the hallway. Inside, an ON AIR neon sign or your channel name in neon on the wall behind you gives the camera something to see. Our gaming and streaming project shows a setup.
A restaurant, cafe or takeaway counter
A PICK UP light box marks where to collect orders. A custom double-sided light box over the door tells people walking along the street where you are. Inside, a neon sign with a word or your logo sets the mood.
A storefront window
For a window seen from the sidewalk, a neon sign hung on ceiling cables is the classic choice. For a sign that sticks out from the wall so people see it from both directions, a double-sided light box is the right shape; if it will hang outside, tell us when you ask for a quote. Our guide to OPEN signs and storefront neon covers windows in detail.
A reception or office wall
If the logo is simple, neon looks warm and inviting. If it has fine print, many colors or gradients, choose a backlit printed panel or a neon sign on a printed backboard.
Decor, events and gifts
A neon sign. It is the one that turns a wall into a backdrop. Start in the neon designer or browse our ready-made designs.
