A neon sign says one thing, all the time, to everyone who walks in. That makes the wording worth a few minutes of thought. Below are more than 80 ideas, sorted by room and occasion, from one-word signs to short sayings and a few puns. Each one comes with its character count and the smallest width it fits, so you can go straight from an idea to the right size in the neon designer.

How to write wording that works in neon

  1. Keep it short. One to four words is the sweet spot. Neon is read at a glance, often from across a room.
  2. Use one to three lines. The longest line sets the width, so two balanced lines often fit a smaller sign than one long one.
  3. Make it yours. A name, a family name, a date or a phrase only your friends understand turns a sign into a keepsake.
  4. Use & instead of “and”. It saves two characters and looks good in script.
  5. Save capitals for short words. OPEN or a single name works in capitals; a phrase reads more easily in mixed case.
  6. Say it out loud. If it sounds right said once, it will still sound right on the wall every day.

How to read the tables

  • Characters counts every letter, space and punctuation mark on one line.
  • One line is the smallest of our widths that holds the phrase on one line, at about 2 in per character.
  • On two lines shows a natural split and the smallest width for it, when that is smaller.

These are minimum widths. If the sign will be read from far away or hang over wide furniture, go bigger; our size guide shows how.

The best ones are personal: a pet’s name, a family saying, the name of the street you grew up on.

Turn your idea into a sign

  1. Type it in the designer and try one, two and three lines.
  2. Pick a font that matches the mood; our guide to the best fonts for neon signs helps.
  3. Choose colors. Several colors in one sign cost nothing extra, so names and dates can each have their own.
  4. Check the free proof. Nothing is made until you approve it, and revisions are free.

If your idea is a logo or a drawing rather than words, start a custom logo neon sign instead.

Questions

What should I put on my neon sign?

Something short that fits the room and the people in it: a name, a single word, a phrase you say often, or a date. One to three lines reads best, and the longest line sets the width.

How many words fit on a neon sign?

Allow about 2 in of width per character, spaces included, on the longest line. A 36 in sign holds about 18 characters per line, and you can use up to 3 lines.

Can I put a name and a date on one sign?

Yes. A common layout is names in a script on the first line and the date in a block font on the second. Each line can have its own color at no extra cost.

Can I write my neon sign in Spanish?

Yes. Type your words in the designer exactly as you want them, accents included, and check them on your free proof before anything is made.

Do you have ready-made phrase signs?

Yes. Ready-made designs such as Good Vibes, Better Together and Cheers start at $99.99. A color other than the one pictured can be requested on the proof at no charge.
