Real glass neon signs, bent by hand

Real glass neon is the original kind of neon sign. Glass tube is bent by hand over a flame to a full-size pattern, filled with neon or argon gas and lit by a high-voltage transformer. The light comes from the gas inside the whole tube, not through a diffusing sleeve. Neon gas glows red-orange; argon with a trace of mercury glows blue, and coated or tinted glass makes the other colors.

The custom glass neon sign is made from your text or logo, 20 to 60 in wide, in 16 glow colors, dimmable or not. It can sit on a clear backboard, in a metal frame or with no backboard, and hang on a wall, hang from the ceiling or stand on its own. Tell us when you order if it goes outdoors, so it is built for that. The glass neon box sign puts the lettering inside an open-front black steel box that protects the glass and hides the transformer, for a back bar or a wall; it is priced by quote.

Glass has limits. Tube comes in 6, 8 or 10 mm (12 mm on request), and very fine detail or thin strokes may need simplifying; our designer tells you before production. Where the tube jumps from one letter to the next, the glass is painted black so only the letters light.

Choose glass for its look. It costs more than LED neon, takes about 4 weeks to make after the proof, and is more fragile to ship and to handle. When a glass sign needs repair after years, it is almost always the transformer or an electrode, and both can be fixed; the glass neon care guide explains. To weigh it against a 12 V sign, read LED neon vs glass neon or start with custom LED neon.

  • Keep the design simple: bold strokes and few small details suit hand-bent glass.
  • Tell us about outdoor use when you order, because it changes how the sign is built.
  • Plan for about 4 weeks of production after you approve the proof.
  • Hang it where people and doors will not knock it; glass is fragile.
  • Leave the transformer where it can be reached for service later.

Questions

What is the difference between glass neon and LED neon?

Glass neon is hand-bent glass tube filled with gas and lit by a high-voltage transformer. LED neon is a flexible silicone tube with LEDs inside that runs on 12 V DC. Glass is chosen for its look; LED neon is less fragile and quicker to make, as the comparison guide explains.

How long does a glass neon sign take?

About 4 weeks of production after you approve the free proof, then transit. Ask us before ordering rush production for glass neon, because it depends on the design.

Can glass neon go outdoors?

Yes, if you tell us when you order so it is built for outdoor use. Mount it in a sheltered spot where it will not be knocked, since the glass can break.

Can a glass neon sign be repaired?

Usually, yes. The tube itself rarely fails; after years it is almost always the transformer or an electrode, and both can be repaired. See the glass neon care guide.

Can I dim a glass neon sign?

Choose Dimmable when you order and the sign comes set up for it. A dimmer made for 12 V LED neon does not work with glass neon.
