Neon for events and photo booths: a planner's guide
Neon signs for photo booths, brand activations and trade shows: picking signs that travel, hanging from frames, battery and booth power, and bulk orders.
Updated

For an event planner, a neon sign is a working prop. It has to survive the van, go up fast, look right on camera and come down without damage, often several times a month. This guide is for planners, photo booth operators, venues and brand teams. It covers which signs to choose, how to move and hang them, how to power them on site, and how to order more than one.
The events and photo booths project puts the usual sign, mounting and power parts on one page.
Where neon earns its place at an event
- Photo booths and selfie walls. A phrase or the event name behind the guests. “Let’s Party”, “Cheers” and “Good Times” are popular ready-made designs; see party neon signs.
- Brand activations. A logo or campaign line that shows up in every guest photo. Start with a custom logo neon sign, from $289.99.
- Trade show booths. A logo on the back wall or a line on the counter.
- Lounges, bars and dessert stations. Small signs that mark a zone.
- Rental inventory. General phrases and shapes that you can book again and again.
Choose signs that travel well
Our LED neon is a flexible silicone tube pressed into a groove routed in a clear acrylic backboard, about 1/4 in thick. Acrylic weighs about half as much as glass and is far less likely to shatter. That makes it the practical choice for signs that move. It still scratches, and it can crack if it is dropped on a corner or bent hard.
If a sign will be handled a lot, two choices help:
- A flame-retardant polycarbonate backboard. Polycarbonate is tougher than acrylic, and this version answers venues and fire inspectors who ask for flame-retardant materials. Tell us before production.
- A simple board shape. A rounded rectangle or a clean outline survives handling better than a board cut to each letter, which leaves many small pieces with corners.
Real glass neon is hand-bent glass on a high-voltage transformer. It is more fragile in shipping and handling, so we do not suggest it for touring setups. Our LED neon vs glass neon guide explains the differences.
Transport and setup checklist
- Keep the box and the packing the sign arrived in. Pack it the same way after every event.
- Carry the sign by the edges of the board, upright. Never lift it by the cable.
- Do not fold the cable sharply where it leaves the board.
- Pack a kit bag: adapter, dimmer, one DC extension, a fresh set of AA batteries if you use the battery box, cable ties, painter’s tape and a microfiber cloth.
- Switch the sign on before guests arrive and check every letter.
- At the end, let it cool, wipe off fingerprints with a dry cloth, then pack.
Hanging from frames, truss and backdrops
Every LED sign comes with the mounting kit chosen at checkout. For events, these are the ones that matter:
- Hanging cables. The ceiling hanging kit has thin stainless cables, adjustable grippers and spring snap hooks that clip into the 1/4 in holes in the board. Two cables suit most signs. Four suit a wide sign or one that must not swing, for example near air vents or a busy walkway.
- Ties to a frame. On pipe-and-drape or truss you can tie the board to the bar through its holes. Use at least two ties at the top, pull them snug and level the sign.
- A table base. The acrylic stand is a clear 8 mm base with a slot. It comes in 6, 10 and 16 in lengths; pick about six tenths of the sign width. The bottom edge of the board must be straight. A tabletop neon sign comes ready for it in 20, 24 or 30 in.
- No-drill adhesive mounts are for smooth, sealed surfaces and need time to set, so they rarely suit a quick event install.
Our guide to hanging a neon sign covers each method.
Power on site
Each sign runs on 12 V DC. The plug-in adapter works on 100 to 240 V and must stay dry.
Battery box
The 8 x AA battery box runs a sign for about 4 to 5 hours per set of batteries.
| Event length | What to bring |
|---|---|
| Up to about 4 hours | 1 set of 8 AA |
| About 4 to 8 hours | 2 sets, change once |
| Full day or several days | Plug in, keep a battery box as backup |
Batteries are not included. The battery box is a free power option when you order a sign.
Venue and booth power
- Venues. Ask where the outlets are before you place the backdrop. A DC extension cable (6.5, 10 or 16 ft) adds distance; use one extension, not a chain. Tape cables down or run them behind the drape.
- Trade shows. At most convention centers, booth electricity has to be ordered ahead from the show’s official electrical contractor. Check the exhibitor manual, order an outlet for the booth, and do not count on a wall outlet.
- Fire rules. Many shows ask for flame-retardant booth materials, and some ask for paperwork in advance. Send us the rules before we make the sign. The power supply is cULus Listed (E466625); only the power supply and the LED light source are certified parts.
Logos and brand work
Send a logo (vector files work best; a photo or sketch is enough to start) and we redraw it as tube paths, with a free mockup and the size. Small text and fine detail are UV printed on the board. For a logo with many colors or gradients, a neon sign on a printed backboard shows the full artwork even when it is switched off. For a counter or hallway, the PICK UP light box is double-sided on a wall bracket. Our guide to turning a logo into neon walks through the steps.
Camera-ready brightness
Photo booth cameras and phones can turn bright neon white. Use the included dimmer to lower the sign until the letters keep their color in a test shot, then leave it there. If the booth uses flash, test that too. Our guide to neon in photos and video has more on settings.
How long it lasts
The LED tube is rated for 50,000 hours, and every sign has a 2-year warranty with free repair. Most event damage is physical: drops, crushed corners and pulled cables. Packing well matters more than anything else. For outdoor events, the outdoor build is IP67 rated, but the adapter and battery box still need cover.
Buying several signs
If you are building a rental inventory, dressing several rooms or ordering for a client, use the trade form. Tell us the designs, widths, quantities and the event date. Each custom sign gets its own free proof, and production starts after approval: 15 to 20 days standard, 10 to 14 days Priority or 7 to 9 days Express, plus 3 to 5 days in transit. Rush is added per sign. If a date cannot be met, we say so before production starts.
For one-off ideas, the neon designer shows the size and price as you type.
