Happy Birthday Neon Sign, Reusable Party Backdrop

Paper banners and foil letters last one party. A neon “Happy Birthday” goes back in its box when the balloons come down and comes out again next year, for the next child or for a grandparent's big birthday.

The words are hot pink script on two lines, which gives the sign a compact, balanced shape. It sits well in the middle of a balloon garland, on the wall behind the cake table or above the gifts.

It is built like all our LED neon. A flexible silicone tube runs along the centre of each script stroke and sits in a groove routed in clear acrylic about 1/4 in thick. The tube runs on low-voltage 12 V DC, fed by a plug-in adapter that takes 100 to 240 V. Ends are rounded and corners curved, so there are no sharp points.

A party room, play space or event venue can use the same sign every weekend. For them the color changing version is worth a look: the remote picks a color to match each party's theme, or lets the sign cycle through colors.

No outlet in the park pavilion or the backyard? Add the 8 x AA battery box for about 4 to 5 hours of light per set of batteries.

Behind a cake or dessert table at home, 24 or 30 in is enough. In the middle of a balloon garland or on a backdrop stand, 30 or 36 in keeps the words readable in photos. For a party room or a venue wall, choose 48 or 60 in.

On a backdrop stand or frame, use ceiling hanging cables or tie the board through its 1/4 in holes. On a painted wall at home, no-drill mounts avoid holes; in a party room that shows it every week, wall standoffs fix it in place. Choose the outdoor build for a yard party that could get rained on.
